Goal setting has really become a key focus of my life these last 10 years. I don’t just mean making a to-do list or writing a few intentions on a sticky note. I mean a ritual of real reflection, journaling, and dreaming—both for the short term and the long game. Each year, I carve out time to take inventory of life: what worked, what didn’t, what stretched me, and what surprised me. Greece had been on both of our bucket lists for years—but for totally different reasons, which is exactly why it ended up being the perfect fit.

For Emory, it was all about the history: ancient civilizations, mythology, battlefields, temples, and actually standing in the places he’d only ever read about. For me, it was the promise of both beachy, blue-water relaxation and European city energy with cobblestones, café patios, and old-world charm.

If you and your partner have different travel styles, Greece is a dream compromise. You can climb ancient ruins one day, swim in crystal-clear water the next, and eat your way through every moment in between.

Trip Logistics: Timing and Travel Agent Help

We traveled in late September into early October, right in the shoulder season, and it was absolutely perfect. Everything was still open, the days were warm enough for beach time, and nowhere felt overly busy or crowded—just lively in the best way.

How We Chose Our Islands

Choosing islands was honestly the hardest part because there are so many good options. We ultimately landed on Paros and Milos because they gave us the classic whitewashed, blue-water look of places like Santorini and Mykonos without the big crowds or price tag. We briefly debated squeezing in a third island, but I’m so glad we didn’t. Sticking to two let us actually settle in and enjoy them, and we have zero regrets about the ones we chose.

When Should You Book Your Honeymoon? I Think ASAP!

We didn’t jet off the day after our wedding. Instead, we took a week—which meant unloading a semi trailer’s worth of wedding décor and slowly attempting to get our lives back in order. It gave us space to catch our breath, see loved ones who stayed a little longer, open gifts, and actually process the day.

We heard the same advice from so many people: “See the Parthenon, but don’t stay in Athens too long.” I strongly disagree. From the moment we stepped off the plane after our Des Moines → Chicago → Athens marathon, the city felt oddly familiar but still thrilling.

Athens has this warm, sun-soaked energy—European but with little flashes that reminded me of Southern California. If someone had told me we were just outside LA in places, I would’ve believed them.

Historical Tour: Easing Into Vacation Mode

On our first morning, we did a guided historical tour booked through our travel agent. It was the ideal way to:

• Fight jet lag without having to make a single decision

• Actually learn what we were looking at instead of just snapping photos and moving on

• Connect with other travelers who were just as excited to be there

Standing at the Parthenon was a true goosebump moment. It felt like stepping onto a page of a textbook.

Food Tour: Best First-Night Move

That evening, we decided at the last minute to join a Greek Food Walking Tour despite being exhausted, and ended up being one of our favorite memories from the entire trip. Stop Two: Roadtrip through the Peloponnese

After Athens, we picked up a rental car and drove toward Sparta, with a stop in Corinthia. I had done exactly zero research on Corinthia—and it ended up being one of the most stunning surprises of the whole trip.

Corinthia: The Beach We Didn’t See Coming

We parked in town to grab lunch, walked a few minutes, and suddenly were standing in front of one of the most beautiful bodies of water I’ve ever seen. Because it was the end of the season, the beach was nearly empty and felt like a secret. If we did this trip again, I’d absolutely spend a night or two here at a place on the water.

Sparta: Historic Small-Town Vibes

When Emory first said he wanted to go to Sparta, I was skeptical. It sounded like a “boy thing”—like he wanted to go just to say he went. But I was so pleasantly surprised. I had no expectations, so everything felt special and intimate, and it was a part of Greece I hadn’t really heard much about.

Sparta felt like a real town where people live, work, and gossip at the same café every morning. It was slower paced and less flashy—exactly what we needed between the bustle of Athens and the islands.

Three Nights, 4 Days, Our longest stay - ATVs, Beaches & Authentic Greek Experiences

Accommodation: Mr & Mrs White Paros (PS: The best complimentary breakfast!)

From Athens, we flew to Paros and instantly understood why people romanticize the Greek islands. Our hotel sat just off the main town, Naousa, where stone-paved streets were car-free and the buildings were the exact whitewashed charm you see on Pinterest, covered in bougainvillea (my favorite) with cats sunbathing in doorways.

The Unplanned Recommendation That Became “The Meal”

On our first night, hungry and tired, we set out for dinner without much of a plan—which is my personal nightmare as a Type A foodie in a new town. Instead of wandering aimlessly, I pulled out a list of recommendations a friend had shared. We picked one, set it in the map, saw the whole town on the walk over, and ended up having our favorite meal of the entire trip at Taverna Glafkos!

Spontaneity is fun, but when it comes to dinner, I want an experience. When Yelp isn’t really a thing, having a short list from friends, locals, or a blog post is gold.
Greeka, however, is like the Greek Yelp and it came in handy many times!

ATVs and Beach Hopping

The highlight of the whole trip for me was renting ATVs and spending our days hopping from beach to beach, exploring little towns and coves, and pulling over whenever something looked pretty—which was always. It was affordable, convenient, and gave us enough independence to feel adventurous without needing a rigid schedule.

Fishing Boat and Greek BBQ Day

My second favorite highlight was the fishing boat and Greek BBQ tour (Antiparos & Despotiko Kaiki Cruise). We swam off tiny islands, I snorkeled for the first time where there were actually fish, and we had an authentic BBQ picnic I’m still dreaming about. We met the most incredible people and even had goats casually wandering the shoreline.

Overall thoughts on Paros, I also just loved wandering Naousa itself. I could’ve spent a whole week there trying new restaurants and blowing my budget on shopping. The town has this buzzing, casual nightlife and such a fun vibe. Parikia, on the other hand, felt more like a busy port city—worth a visit, but if you’re choosing, stay in Naousa.

Stop Four: Milos

Two nights, One day - Rough ferry ride, colorful fishing villages, and our most adventurous meal

Accommodation: Santa Maria Village Resort & Spa (Stunning pool, I wish we had time to enjoy it!)

We took a ferry from Paros to Milos, and the seas were not playing around. Even with motion sickness meds and wrist bands, it was… a lot. But Milos itself made every queasy minute worth it.

More ATVs, More Magic

With only one full day, we rented ATVs again and hit some of the island’s biggest highlights:

• Colorful fishing villages with houses right on the water

• A scenic lunch at Medusa Restaurant where we tried sun-dried octopus and swordfish souvlaki

• Firiplaka Beach with pink-tinted cliffs that looked almost unreal

That night, we found a tiny family-run restaurant, O! Hamos!, offering farm-fresh, homemade food that nailed the indoor–outdoor atmosphere and storytelling. The space was beautiful, the hospitality was warm, and the food made us quietly happy in the best way.

My biggest regret is that we didn’t have more time here. Milos is known for having incredible, totally different-feeling beaches all over the island, and we only got to fully enjoy one. Our hotel was also stunning, and I would’ve loved at least one full day of spa time and pool lounging with that view.

Honeymoon tip: If you’re like us and get FOMO about “seeing it all,” try to add one or two pure relaxation days to your trip. I wouldn’t trade any of our experiences, but I absolutely would’ve added another day or two for slow mornings and pool time.

Going Home: Lost Luggage, Low Stress

On our way home, we flew back to Athens, only to realize our luggage had not flown back with us.

We had packed AirTags (a must-have for your registry) in our checked bags, so we could see exactly where they were and watch them slowly catch up to us. We stayed at the airport hotel which was SO convenient, worth it, and ended up being one of the nicest of the whole trip, Sofitel Athens Airport,ordered room service, watched Netflix, and flew Athens → Chicago → Des Moines the next morning. The luggage arrived a few days later without any drama.

Travel Tip: No matter where I’m going, domestic, international, direct flight, I always assume my bag, even a carry-on isn’t going to make it. So I pack essentials in my backpack, a casual outfit, underwear, PJs, any special attire for a formal or a swimsuit, and key toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and a hairbrush. Stores exist everywhere, but having your basics you love on hand can be the difference between “mild inconvenience” and “full meltdown.” For Greece be sure to also pack motion sickness meds, a portable charger, and this bag was essential for ATV days.

Practical Tips and What We’d Do Differently

Here’s what we’d tell any couple planning a Greece honeymoon, friend-to-friend style:

• Add the hotel breakfast option. If your hotel offers an add-on breakfast, do it! We were on the fence because we usually like to explore local spots, but every hotel gave us a genuinely good, authentic breakfast with tons of variety. It was such a gift to sleep in, stay in comfy clothes, wander down to the lobby, and not have to hunt for food or pay for yet another meal out. It was one of those small choices that made the whole trip feel easier and more relaxing (thanks to the travel agent again!)

• Go a little longer if you can. We wished we’d stretched our trip to a full two weeks. Greece takes time to travel around, and it’s a place you want to linger—slow mornings, long lunches, and extra beach days.

• Rent ATVs on the islands. They’re the most fun, flexible way to explore Paros and Milos. Pack layers, wear helmets, and build in time for spontaneous stops.

• Don’t skip Athens. Give it at least one or two full days. It has far more personality, history, and food than the “just see the Parthenon and leave” if you enjoy city life.

• Seriously, consider a travel agent. Especially when you’re planning a wedding at the same time. Having someone map your route and handle logistics lets you show up as the fun version of yourselves, not the stressed-out project manager version.

I can’t explain how quickly your world-view changes the moment you slip a ring on your finger—like flipping the switch from the longest “someday” of your life to all-in bridal mode overnight. One of my biggest wedding pet peeves? The thought of our friends and family traveling miles (sometimes states!) just to spend two minutes in a receiving line before disappearing into the crowd. Sometimes, what you think is “the dream” doesn’t line up with your real priorities or your budget. We chose this venue for its natural beauty and because we got the whole place (house included!) from Thursday to Monday. That meant more quality time, more space to set up and unwind, and a total ‘destination’ vibe... even though we were just twelve minutes from our front door.

Advice: Pick a venue and date that feels right emotionally, as well as logistically. And consider comfort and go back to the experience you’re trying to create—sometimes “easy to get to” means more laughs, more hugs, and less time spent lost in traffic.

We planned multiple group events: bonfires, brunch, evening cocktails, and multiple dance parties.

What worked best was having friends close, delegating the little stuff, and prioritizing interactive moments—like guest speeches, photo ops, communal games, and time in shared spaces.

Advice: Build your schedule backward from “the vibe” you want, not from Pinterest. Focus on maximum quality time, mix guests up at every event, and provide plenty of places for conversations to happen naturally.

The Moments & Mishaps That Made Us Laugh (and Cry)

• The Heat: It was 95 degrees…in the middle of September… (goes to show that there is NO safe day in the Midwest) and everyone was melting—including the antique chairs. Sure, some shirts were ruined, but it made shady corners and cool breezes precious, and the sun was absolute magic for helping set the vibes.

• Brothers & Unexpected Support: My brother, who I rarely see eye-to-eye with, showed up all weekend—helping, supporting, even stealing the show with his unexpected, emotional speech. Give people space to be the hero; you might just be surprised.

• Purse Panic & Sleepover Blues: I tried the “don’t see the bride before the wedding” tradition and it backfired—lost purse, freezing night, and way more stress than necessary. If you need your partner to feel grounded, skip the superstition and have that special moment.

  Advice: Let go of perfect—expect hiccups, awkward moments, and a little mess. That’s life, and why should your wedding be any different? Feel it all: the good, the wild, the ‘oops.’ And remember to breathe and soak it in; those are usually the memories that stick.

Anchoring the Emotion

It’s overwhelming, honestly: so many happy tears, the laughter that snuck up on me, nerves that could have ruined a moment if I’d let them. The only way through was to carve out private, quiet time just for Emory and me—to let go, trust the people we’d chosen to handle the details, and stay present. That decision to prioritize us first (and emotion above everything) shaped every second.

Advice: Start every planning session with a feeling, not a checklist. Be true to yourself, then think of your guests, and let everything else fall into place.

What Photos Can’t Capture

The biggest thing? Just how much every guest meant to us—having them all present together, witnessing our story, was beyond words. No photo can fully express those quiet moments of gratitude, connection, and the feeling of getting to share our home and our love with our closest friends and family.

The steady paycheck, the comfort of routine, the fear of starting over—it all felt safer than taking the leap into something new. I told myself I’d wait until after the wedding, or until my finances felt more stable, or until I magically felt “ready.” But deep down, I knew I was lying to myself.

During one of the journaling exercises for the workshop, I had what can only be described as an emotional meltdown followed by a breakthrough. The thought of staying in my current role for another 9 or 10 months made me physically ill. It wasn’t that my job was terrible; it just wasn’t right for me anymore. And waiting for some perfect moment to make a change wasn’t going to solve anything.

That session with Elyse—and the group of women who shared their own fears and breakthroughs—lit a fire in me. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel stuck; I felt ready to take action.

Taking the Leap

Once I decided to move forward, there was no turning back. I started doing the legwork: crunching numbers to figure out if this was financially feasible, committing to what it would take logistically to get licensed in real estate, and having tough conversations with my fiancé and family about how this decision would impact our plans.

What started as an overwhelming idea quickly turned into an actionable plan. My timeline went from months to weeks to days. Before I knew it, I was handing in my notice—and let me tell you, the weight that lifted off my shoulders was immediate and undeniable.

• 📚 READ: The House Maid by Fredia McFadden. McFadden has quickly risen to the top of "my favorite author list" after reading her 3-book series The Housemaid. Her thrillers always deliver an unexpected twist that never disappoints.

• 📺 WATCH: Leave the World Behind on Netflix. Although it came out in 2023, we just watched it and it's one of the better movies I've seen in a long time with an all-star cast. The plot hits a little too close to home that literally had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It's not scary in terms of a horror movie, but it is terrifying. You know it's good when you have to take a moment to pause.

• 🎧 LISTEN: Funny Story by Emily Henry. This is my favorite audio book I've ever listened to, it's narrated by Julia Whelan who was so incredible that now I'm basing my next audio book off of whatever she's reading.

You know those Hallmark movies where the big city girl moves back to her quaint hometown and everything just falls into place? Well, let me tell you, my return to small-town Iowa hasn't been quite that picture-perfect – but in many ways, it's been even better.

Everyone wants to know, "Why did you move back?"

The truth is, Emory, my boyfriend, and I had already been feeling a void in our lives after the pandemic – a sense of disconnection from the familiarity and comfort of being close to family. This feeling was only intensified by life's unexpected twists. Just as we were about to move back across the country, my dad unexpectedly passed away, leaving us with a profound sense of loss and a renewed appreciation for the importance of family.

In many ways, this experience solidified our decision to move back to Iowa. It wasn't just about chasing a romanticized ideal of small-town life; it was about reconnecting with what truly mattered to us. Despite the challenges that followed, the motivation to return remained strong – a desire to build a life where we could slow down, find our own pace, and create something meaningful.

This journey has been anything but straightforward, but it's taught me the value of embracing change and finding strength in the unexpected.

It was during this time of transition that I recalled an interview with Joanna Gaines about her pursuit of "contentment."

Her perspective challenged my skepticism about the word:

3. Stay Curious & Connected: Leverage technology to keep one foot in the wider world. Virtual workshops and conferences allow you to sharpen your skills while enjoying small-town perks.

4. Embrace the Pressure to Grow: There's a unique, positive pressure that comes from a community that's known you since childhood. Use their belief in your potential as fuel for personal development. And if you're joining a new community entirely, don't be afraid to lean on the friends who choose to show up for you – their support can be just as powerful.

The Unexpected Gift of Small-Town Living

Contrary to what you might expect, living in a small town doesn't shrink your world – it can actually expand it. With a strong home base, I've found the confidence to dream bigger and reach further than ever before.

A New Chapter Begins

January marked a major milestone in my life - the end of an era, if you will. After nearly seven incredible years as the Creative and Innovation Manager at Roberts Beauty (and later as part of Innovative Beauty Group), I decided to turn the page and start a fresh chapter. I know some of you may have never even understood what I even did in my role. Long story short, I was constantly dreaming up new beauty products and helping bringing them to life (yes, including Florapy.) From conceptualization to market launch, I was involved in so many aspects of the beauty business – trend forecasting, product development, packaging design, you name it. It was a whirlwind of creativity, strategy, and yes, a whole lot of product testing!

Lessons Learned Along the Way

For those of you eyeing a similar career path, it truly was a dream job a lot of the time and if you have any questions on getting into the industry, I’d love to help connect you.

These past couple of years have been a real eye-opener. Trading in the hustle and bustle of city life for the charm of small-town living has been... well, let's just say it's been an adventure! Sure, the career change has been a big adjustment, but the rewards have been immeasurable.There's something special about waving to your neighbors as you grab your morning coffee, or bumping into friends at the local farmers market. It's a different pace, a different vibe, and I'm here for it.

So here's to new beginnings, to chasing dreams, and to finding joy in the unexpected turns life throws our way. I can't wait to share more of this journey with you all. Who knows? This weekend will mark one year since we closed on our first home. I’ve dreamed of owning my own home ever since I first discovered HGTV but once I was ready to pull the trigger, that dream often felt unattainable. During the pandemic, we watched as the all already out-of-reach housing prices continued to climb. Back in California while walking the dog, Emory and I would analyze every house in our neighborhood and add various ideas and things to our wish list. (While watching HGTV shows I used to make fun of people who turned down a beautiful home for lack of mature trees but now I totally get it.)

Our ideal scenario still seemed so far beyond our reach, California was starting to feel less and less like home for many different reasons. I knew I was ready for a change but I was unsure what that would look like. Throughout 2022 a lot of little moments triggered something in my gut that was like “Maybe it’s time to go home.” After visiting Iowa in June, Emory and I both started to take that idea a little more seriously.

From that point, Emory and I were knee-deep wading through Zillow. He constantly looked up deals in Iowa while I tried to find anything else anywhere else that still made sense. Eventually, Emory just bypassed getting my opinion and went straight to the source, my mom who also happens to be our realtor. To which she would cautiously remind us that sometimes the photos in these listings are deceiving and we could find better. To prove it to use, that following Friday morning she sent us a brand-new listing.

It was this adorable little English Tudor-style home (my favorite style of home.) It was full of charm and personality. It was move-in-ready but it offered a lot of opportunities for some fixer-up style renovations. It was very reasonably priced ($165,000) considering the market was still booming. And on top of all that it was located in my little hometown (not 100% a selling point but it offered a different degree of comfortability.)

For me, it was love at first sight. While repeatedly scrolling through ALL of the listing photos I could immediately envision all of its potential. What all happened next seems like a blur. I'm sure there were a few frantic text exchanges with Emory asking if he’s taken a look at it and painstakingly waiting for him to share his opinion. Eventually, he gave me the go-ahead to at least set up a “showing.” A few hours later he raced home from work to tour the house with my mom via FaceTime. I just remember the adrenaline and falling in love detail by detail as we entered every room (except when I realized the only shower was in the partially finished basement.)

I knew I loved the house. I truly didn’t think we’d find a better deal or opportunity. It seemed to offer almost everything we wanted but most importantly it offered a tangible way to represent the bigger question of “Are we really moving back to Iowa?” Many conversations followed weighing the pros and cons and making many mental checklists of whether or not this decision would be feasible. After a lot of debate, we finally decided we were on the same page and we at least wanted to take a shot and put in an offer.

Within what felt like hours, we had an accepted offer and were officially buying that we had never seen in person and began formulating a plan to move back across the country.

While the first year of homeownership didn’t go quite as planned, I couldn’t be happier that we made this decision. It’s so nice to have a place that’s truly our own that we’re free to make decisions about as we please. Since the first time I saw it online and in person my mind has been racing with design and decorating ideas. We have big plans and lofty aspirations for each room. I look forward to figuring out how we can DIY and make those ideas a reality. Finding a compromise between Emory's and my design styles (I’m only allowed to paint 1 room pink) has been a fun and challenging adventure.

One thing we both were certain about was the design for our primary bedroom (a project that is currently in progress and more to come on that hopefully very soon.) Other than that our first major project was having a fence installed so that Raleigh could have free rein and enjoy the home too. A fence might not feel like the most glamorous or affordable house addition, but how it’s improved our quality of life is priceless.

I can’t wait to share more home projects here with you. I’m trying my best to take a one-project and one-room-at-a-time approach. The biggest unexpected blessing of homeownership however has been the gift of time. This home is ours for as long as we want it to be. We can take as much time as we need and there’s no pressure to get it all done immediately (no matter how tempting that might be.)

PS: Our actual property doesn’t have any mature trees... So remember things that might seem like a deal-breaker are sometimes actually more of a compromise. What something might lack might pay off in other ways you could have never imagined. Keep an open mind, trust your gut, and follow the journey wherever it might take you.

After all those shows you’ll need a palette cleanser! The Jonas Brothers interview on Armchair Expert led me to find out about this unexpected gem, Claim to Fame. Hosted by Kevin and Frankie Jonas, this guilty-pleasure TV show adds a clever twist to the typical contest tv show format; all contestants are related to a celebrity (singer, actor, athlete, public figure, etc.) and their challenge is to keep their identity under wraps. The real magic unfolds as viewers at home can compete alongside the contestants to piece together clues to reveal the celebrity relatives. While Claim to Fame is still finding its stride in its early seasons, this addictive concoction of mystery and fame is undoubtedly here to stay for seasons to come.

Docuseries/Non-Fiction | Netflix | 1 Season

Although I’m still working my way through it, I can already tell that Quarterback is a big hit! Fall and football go hand in hand and although I usually reserve all my football fanship for college league (go Hawks!) the docuseries Quarterback has re-piqued my interest in the NFL. This series takes an intimate day-to-day look into the lives of three NFL quarterbacks while bringing to life the challenges, strategies, and unwavering commitment demanded by the profession. Regardless of your NFL allegiance, the documentary effortlessly captures the enchantment, thrill, and camaraderie inherent in the game, making a fan out of even the most indifferent. If you're reconsidering your football fandom post the Taylor effect, Quarterbacks is the perfect gateway into the fantasy that is NFL football.

This past May when I was looking ahead at my jam-packed summer I was immediately stressed out about what I was going to wear. After doing a much-needed closet purge before moving back from California, I realized that even what was left of my wardrobe didn’t really inspire me. Some of the clothes I owned no longer reflected my lifestyle or personal style. I knew I wanted new outfits that I felt both confident and beautiful in, and I also wanted something new for each event even though I know it’s unrealistic. When I go shopping I also realize I have expensive taste without the budget to support it (can anyone else relate?) Truthfully, I was also really out of practice when it came to clothes shopping. If I didn’t find what I was looking for on a TJ Maxx rack I had no idea where to start.

All that thought finally pushed me into trying my now favorite obsession, Nuuly. If you saw me IRL (or even spoke to me over the phone) this summer, I’ve probably already talked your ear off about it. But to those of you who haven't heard I’m so excited to share it with you.

So what is it: Nuuly is a monthly clothing rental service. Think like Rent the Runway however less NYC vibes and more Southern California styles. Nuuly’s clothing selection tends to be more bohemian, rock and roll, and free spirit. It’s a subscription-based service (that you can pause/resume at any time) that allows you to rent 6 articles of clothing every four weeks. In between your rental period, you can browse the 100's of new styles being added to the service and “add” them to your closet. You can mix and match and borrow anything from a formal dress, a trendy graphic tee, a pair of jeans, or even a seasonal jacket. They carry a lot of high-end brands that are very wearable (some of my favorites include Anthropologie, Paige Denim, Free People and Farm Rio.) Basically, any fashion/style I’ve ever aspired to own and wear, they carry. So basically it’s like shopping my dream closet every month.

The $$$ breakdown: Every month is $98 + tax. I know what you’re thinking, “A hundred dollars for something I don’t even get to keep? What a waste,” because that’s what I was thinking too at first but hear me out....

Still, I know that math can seem like a lot, but here is an example of my financial awakening to justify it further... While on a bachelorette trip, we were doing a little local shopping and I immediately fell in love with an $80 crew neck sweatshirt. When you have a room full of women hyping you up, it’s crazy how quickly you can find a way to justify the purchase and walk away with the most expensive souvenir sweatshirt. This is only one example of the many times I’ve bought something for a special occasion or a themed party and only wore it once. Or the time when I bought something that was new just because it was new, affordable, and “good enough” even though I didn’t really love it. I can guarantee in all these situations, I spent more than $17 for that item/outfit only to wear it once and not even feel great in it.

Since May, I’ve rented a total of 3 boxes (18 items), and here are my thoughts.

Reasons why I love it:

• Confidence Boost: I have never felt more confident in my body and sense of style than I have this summer. There’s no better feeling than having something new to wear whether in anticipation of wearing it for a special occasion or just for the fact that it’s new. It’s also helped me step outside of my comfort zone and try things I wouldn’t normally buy. On top of that, it’s truly empowering to be able to wear the clothes and brands you’ve admired for years even if it’s only temporary. The way these clothes have made me feel in the last 3 months while I was wearing them or when look back at pictures has made every dollar I spent worth it.

• Ratings & Reviews: I was really worried that things wouldn’t fit and out of the 18 pieces I’ve borrowed, only 1 item was so off on the size chart that it was unwearable. The Nuuly community does a great job of showing up to help one another by offering detailed reviews and photos of each item. For 90% of the items, I was able to find someone with almost the exact same height, weight, and even bra size to compare to, and on every occasion, the item fit exactly as they said it did.

• Sustainability Aspect: I am guilty of loving fast fashion. I love to feel trendy in the moment, however, I don’t want to pay for something of quality especially when I know won’t stay in style for long. Now that I work fully remote and live in athleisure wear, it really doesn’t make sense to invest in pieces that I won’t get longevity out of. Nuuly is a great solution to shop based on occasion without guilt or breaking the bank.

• Affordable and Attainable: I could have never afforded to buy any of the items I’ve borrowed brand new. This dress above retails at almost $300! And a lot of things I borrowed I enjoyed wearing but would have never actually bought. Although it’s an additional monthly expense, It’s actually helped cut back on my spending significantly. I looked at Nuuly in the same way as a utility bill in the sense that I knew exactly what it was going to cost me each month, I could prepare and then I knew I wouldn’t go over it. While I was actively renting on Nuuly I wasn’t falling victim to marketing emails or finding myself distracted by other online shopping, instead, I would just spend all my time browsing the new items added to Nuuly and adding to my virtual closet.

• For Keeps: Say you fall in love with an item and you really want to keep it. Each item you rent you can decide to purchase at a discounted rate. That rate varies depending on the item, brand, and how many times the item has been worn, etc. I’ve seen the discounts range from 10 - 65% off. For example, I did decide to keep a pair of jeans. I originally rented them in one size and they fit OK but then I rented a second time in a size up and they were perfect! The original retail price was more than $200 and I bought them for $90 and they look and feel brand new.

Still Skeptic?
Here are some of the questions I had...

• Missing Sizes: When I first started browsing I was frustrated that all the things I wanted were “sold out” and rented at that time. While it’s true that the timing might not work out for what you need there are SO many options that you’ll always be able to find something similar.

• Doesn’t Fit: Because people share so much information in their reviews, if you’re willing to do your homework before ordering, you’ll have great luck. Unfortunately, if something doesn’t fit, you don’t get any kind of credit or return, you’re just out of luck with that item. So if you’re planning on ordering something for a specific event and you’re worried about the sizing, you can always order 2 different sizes of the same item as long as they're both available.

• Quality: I was worried the pieces would be really worn at first but actually on 3 or 4 occasions I was actually the first person to rent that item and received it new with tags! Some pieces have been clearly worn but never past the point that I would be uncomfortable wearing them.

• Laundry/Clean: They do all of that for you! You can send it back dirty and they’ll wash/dry clean as needed, so easy! Now I will say that the package they ship in is reused and not the cleanest/air-tight so it can smell a little dingy from the shipping process but nothing a wash or fabric spray couldn’t spritz up.

• Returns: It couldn’t be easier. It comes with a pre-printed return label that you just put on and then drop off at a UPS drop-off.

I am in my Celebration Era. You know the one – that period of time when your calendar is filled with events to celebrate your friend’s major life milestones. The one where vacation time is on reserve for destination weddings and weekends are spent traveling from baby showers to housewarming parties.

It can be a lot at times to commit the funds, allocate the PTO, and make your plans revolve around other people's “major qualifying life events.” It’s tough to know when to say “no” and admit when you may have overextended yourself, but honestly, at this phase in my life, I wouldn’t have it any other way. To me, it’s the greatest honor to be invited to celebrate a friend’ special moment no matter the occasion. I want to be there to cheer you on, hype you up, and share in your win with you! While I haven’t always been able to say yes for this reason or that, in my current chapter, attending these events is a major priority to me. I want to be able to show up when asked and enjoy every moment. However, I never could have imagined the impact these celebrations would have on my own journey.

These experiences this summer have opened the door for a lot of self-reflection. They’ve provided a major source of inspiration and some clarity on what I want out of the next chapter of my life. These joyous occasions have brought me to new locations I likely would have never been. So with all that being said, here’s a little recap of my summer and a little insight as to why you haven’t heard from me in a while (whether on this blog or IRL.)

June 15TH - Abby R’s Bachelorette Party | Okoboji, Iowa

Growing up together we’ve experienced so many milestones alongside one another. Abby and her sister have often felt like the little sisters I never had. Now, although older, I find myself in awe of the things Abby has accomplished and the woman she’s grown into.

On this trip, I experienced a truly perfect day. How many times can one confidently say that in their life? It started off with a slow start of waking up surrounded by a room full of friends and debriefing the previous night’s shenanigans. Eventually, it included a beautiful walk to get coffee and breakfast followed by some impromptu window shopping. When in Arnolds Park you can’t pass up an opportunity to ride the classic wooden rollercoaster (which Emma and I road on 2x.) Being at the lake I couldn’t resist a quick and refreshing swim followed by a more lengthy shower and getting ready for an evening out on a boat! When we were considering moving back to the Midwest a year ago, this was the kind of perfect day I envisioned and was afraid of missing out on.

June 23rd - Hayley’s Bachelorette Party | Charleston, South Carolina

Hayley and I met while studying in Italy during a college summer. She might not have been the Italian Lover I dreamed of (LOL) but she was the one I needed. Since meeting abroad, our adventures have carried back and forth to visit one another in whichever new city we’re calling home. I’ve never met a woman so confident, so generous, and passionate about everything life has to offer. From the smallest and simplest moments to the grandest gestures, Hayley knows how to embrace the moment and make those around her feel special.

On her bachelorette trip, I was faced with SO many moments that put life into perspective. My attempt to fly to Charleston humbled me and served as a reminder that life is fleeting. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan but sometimes a little spontaneity can be even more rewarding. A key takeaway I’ll now practice is when going on a trip, if you have the opportunity, always take off one more day than you truly need. Whether the result is you’re stuck somewhere longer than you thought but stress-free or you make it home and have a day to recoup, both are valid and a huge gift.

July 8th - Sara’s Baby Shower | Southern California

Sara only continues to amaze me with her grace. A year ago, I don’t think she couldn’t fathom where she would have been. She has accomplished SO much - I don’t fully have words to describe it. To put it simply she approaches life with this sense of comfort and bliss that I truly admire. Getting to shower her, her husband, and baby Ames (yes, I can confirm Iowa helped inspire his name despite both her parents being SoCal natives…) with love was truly remarkable.

Watching their family and love grow has taught me that it’s OK to not know what’s next. To just trust the process. If you take every day with the same stride and confidence it can only lead to achieving greatness.

July 10th - Work | Los Angeles, California

As much fun as it is to travel for work, I’m so grateful I don’t have to do it on a more routine basis. It makes the moments more special when they’re fewer and far between. I’m so fortunate to have the feeling of one foot still being in LA and one foot back at home. For now, this has been a huge comfort since moving back home

July 21st - Hayley’s Wedding | Mt. Hood Area, Oregon

The same Hayley you heard about earlier… I could always count on her to stand by my side through any adventure and so it was an honor to get to stand by her side on her big day. Even more special was to be able to play a small role in her wedding by sharing painting and design skills with her by designing her wedding stationery suite.

Man did this couple spoil us though! I’m truly not sure we’ll ever attend a wedding like this one! It perfectly showcased how beautiful the blending of family and friends at a wedding can be. They truly curated an unforgettable experience that was a beautiful gift. This couple demonstrates the true value of marriage–it's not about what you may lose as an individual, but rather what you gain from having a life partner.

July 28th - Abby’s 30th Birthday | Ozarks, Missouri

Not the aforementioned Abby, different Abbigail. This one is my ride-or-die. My greatest supporter. She’s a firecracker in every way you can imagine-beautiful, strong and the life of the party. Her 30th celebration was no different. It was full of excitement, love, laughter and adrenaline. She has always taught me to never take life too seriously. She helps to put it into perspective and this weekend was no different. Life is all about perspective, and the ironic comparison between the Ozarks TV show and our weekend in the Ozarks serves as a powerful metaphor. It all comes down to how you shape your outlook on life. it. If you make it out to be stressful, it will deliver. If you let things go with ease, life too can be easy.

August 12th - Abby R’s Wedding | Boone, Iowa

August 20th - Iowa State Fair | Des Moines, Iowa

All of these events were about old friends coming celebrating memories as well as new beginnings. These were experiences I may have taken for granted in the past but through these moments I’ve found a deeper appreciation for my hometown and state. Sometimes a slower-paced lifestyle is enough. Content with contentment is a mantra I’m striving towards.

Abby & Ian’s love inspires me in a similar way. They’re both just so good at being. Being in the moment, being enjoyable no matter who they’re with, but mostly for being able to be themselves. I’ve had the unique opportunity to know them both as individuals as well as as a couple and they’re a shining example of how you can maintain your identity both as an individual and a unit.

August 24 - Slater 7 Reunion | San Diego, California

When I moved into the dorm during my freshmen year at the University of Iowa fully anticipated my life to play out as any movie would. Fortunately for me, it actually did. Four of the first people I met on my floor would soon become my best friends. Fast forward 10 years (I still can’t believe it’s been that long) and we’re still just as close as we were at the height of of our friendship. Since graduating we’ve all moved on to the next stages of life but continue to make it a point to get together and see one another. Shared memories and shared experiences create a powerful bond. but it takes work and commitment to maintain it.

August 28 - Work | Los Angeles, California

By now, the travel fatigue has set in. Maybe for the first time ever... but can you imagine why?? Only two more trips–a week on the East Coast for work and another bachelorette in Nebraska–until travel hiatus. And although I’m already exhausted, I wouldn’t have traded any of it or what’s to come. I’ve witnessed and felt so much love these past few months and that gives me a renewed sense of purpose.

I’ll leave you with this... it might be a stretch to make room in the budget. You might already have a lot going on. But push through that comfort zone. If it’s someone you love, it’ll be worth it. You’ll figure it out on the back end. You’ll make the sacrifice elsewhere. There is nothing like the gift of an experience or a memory. So be a yes-girl, push your boundaries, and embrace the moment as it relates to your own reality.

Queen of the Junk praising the junk gods

I love hunting. Strike that. I'm obsessed with hunting. No, not in your traditional sense involving weapons and furry creatures... but I assume the energy that comes from going outside with hopeful anticipation for what you might find to bring home is about the same. My guilty pleasure is hunting junk.

My personal definition of junk: Something that is old, interesting, quirky, and was at one time loved by people before me, and I'll continue to love (or help someone else love) for generations to come.

When a thing finds its way into someone's home, it's rarely by pure happenstance. Someone, somewhere attached some form of value to that inanimate object and they held on to it until it no longer served them. While in their possession that item captures stories, truths, and secrets while providing inspiration until one day, it no longer holds the same meaning and it's sold, discarded, or donated. Maybe you'd say I'm giving material items more credit than they deserve, but for me, part of the thrill is imagining the lives of these items before they presented themselves to me. The appeal lies in the adventure that souvenir coffee cup took to get here or the recipes once cooked in the stunning Pyrex bowl before me.

Why I truly love thrifting (having even been in the game myself with Jae's Funky Junk), it only feeds part of the addiction. See thrift stores are curated collections where someone often assigns value to an item. While it's still thrilling to search shelves, nooks, and crannies, in order for me to take it home it has to be truly exceptional. As a full-on junky, the purest high comes from finding a hidden gem buried on a bargain store bottom shelf, or something discarded on a curb just waiting to be rescued. I love taking something that someone saw zero potential in and reimagining how it could be transformed into something valuable again. Plus at the most basic level FREE or a really, really good deal seems like a good place to start.

I often try and think about where this obsession and subtle hoarding tendency originated. As it pertains to this, my earliest memory is going to my great-grandma June's farmstead. While I unfortunately can't remember the extent of her numerous collection inside her house (I'm sure she was #GrannyChicGoals!) my memory comes from finding some Abalone shells (that didn't make the cut for her indoor collection) that she was using a landscaping out in the yard. I remember how ugly and dirty they were on the outside but when you picked them up and turned them over they were so shiny and covered with iridescent patterns inside. When she allowed me to take one home with, it solidified something inside me.

While that instance lit the spark, my mom tended to the fire, (much to her and Emory’s demise now, I imagine.) So many of my favorite Saturdays growing up and throughout my 20s revolve around her asking me to go junking. I loved helping her find things, exploring small-town Iowa, and catching up as we drove from town to town.

While it started as a passion represented by countless rock and stamp collections it eventually led to a college dorm room furnished with curbside furniture flips (long before it was popular on Instagram.) Fast forward a decade later and the love of the hunt evolved into me starting Jae's Funky Junk, a vintage pop-up shop that frequented the Los Angeles flea market circuit up.

Since starting Jae's Funky Junk, my love for junk grew even deeper. The stories about objects grew to be connections shared with other people. The value I got out of running a flea market booth was not one of the intended monetary compensation (somehow I had the profits spent before the money came in, go figure) but that of friendships formed between vendors, stories shared with customers, and lessons learned throughout the whole process.

While I genuinely loved working the markets, there's a LOT of behind-the-scenes work beyond what I could have ever imagined. Sourcing was the best part, but love for junk is an addiction. I struggled to find the balance between the business and my obsession at the cost of our apartment's form and function. I couldn't help but feel like it was my heroic mission to save the items from the alley no matter how many other projects were still waiting to be completed.

After some therapy (literally) and moving to a new home, Jae's Funky Junk has a new mission. I'm focusing my energy on designing and curating our home first (more in-depth coming soon.) I'm trying my best to only pick up junk when I can see that it will meet a present need in our home. I swore to Emory that I wouldn't lose sight of the function of our space and trust me, he holds me to that while still finding a way to support me on this adventure. It also comes with more of an effort that when an item no longer serves me, I have to let things move on and take their stories elsewhere. While selling is no longer a primary goal, it's bound to happen from time to time maybe in the form of a garage sale or on Facebook marketplace. Until then, I'll be sharing our house interior design story along with furniture flips and DIYs.

Lessons Learned: When you let something go, you will always find something new that will bring you renewed energy for your space! By donating to Goodwill or Salvation Army you're providing someone else the opportunity to find your former items and give them the same excitement it once brought you. Not only is street-sourcing and thrifting a sustainable alternative for the environment, but it's also a sustainable option for your wallet. Yes, you save on what it'd cost you to buy something new, BUT what I recently realized is that if you take care of something and fix it, there will always be a market for vintage so rather than discard, you can just resell it!

Research the items you find, share their stories, and let people know how they came to be yours. Put things out on display, and give them a new life. If it brings you joy, more is always more.

I have always had a hard time identifying with my age. My interior design style suggests I'm an old-fashioned grandma reluctant to move on, yet my birthday gifts, like Play-Doh and sidewalk chalk, make me seem like an eight-year-old. “Act your age” has to be the worst advice reprimand ever given because life is much more enjoyable when you embrace both your inner child and your old soul. It's important to remember that age is only one small part of your identity, so why confine yourself to its label? Live in the moment and honor whatever side of you shows up.

Being twenty-something is tough. Ask anyone outside of their twenties and they’ll tell you all about why the 20s are the best years of your life but let’s be honest - that does not bring me any comfort! Life is far from a guarantee but the odds are the majority of us are going to outlive our twenties so let me be the first to tell you I’m going to make damn sure it only goes up from here.

I’m about 2 weeks away from 28 so here’s a little insight into what I’ve learned so far and a sneak peek of the topics I plan to explore in future posts, so let me know if you can relate to any of these moments. Also, I have been described before as an overly positive person (something I considered to be a compliment) but since you joined me on this new iteration of Day of Jae, I've got at least one more little rant to start with in order for you to understand where I’m coming from.

In your twenties, the veil and mystery of adulthood are lifted at some point. (A different time, moment, or scenario for everyone but it’s a guarantee that it will and it will likely crash right into you.) Everything you thought being an adult would be - it is… but it also comes with a lot more clauses than you realized. The road you’ve been groomed to travel –do good in school, go to college, pick a major– eventually the road begins to disappear right in front of you leaving you wondering which way to go or if you even took the right path to begin with. You’re suddenly trusted with making your own decisions despite not having the best track record. You become in charge of your time, routine, and oh yeah–health insurance! One day you look around and realize you could really use some more friends only to further realize that as an adult it’s basically impossible.

Somewhere along this journey though people begin to officially label you as an “adult”, but don’t get too excited because everyone still wants a say in your personal life and the decision you make. They pass their judgments on what you should be doing by asking you about the most intimate details of your life such as when are you going to meet someone? Why aren’t you married? How many kids do you want to have…

I know they mostly mean well, but they’ve forgotten how tough being twenty-something can truly be. They’ve forgotten that while life is busy kicking you’re ass at every turn you’re also supposed to be enjoying every waking minute of this decade. You’re supposed to be making mistakes worth telling stories about 30 years from now while practicing full responsibility and starting to grow up. Bit of a contradiction if you ask me but both are warranted.

Don’t get me wrong, you will have memories though that you look back on and think wow, that really was the best. You will travel down your own path and you will find some answers waiting for you there. You will take some risks and follow your heart (or gut) even when no one else seems to understand. You will meet a new friend somewhere where you least expect it and you will book the trip even when it seems a little out of your budget. You will make lasting memories as long as you make time for it and allow it to happen while you’re busy figuring out the rest of it.

There is a lot of good and greatness that will come out of our twenties, and I do believe that these accomplishments are worthy of being celebrated throughout our entire lives. But speaking from experience there will also be a lot of moments of growth. You might even be forced to change course and question everything. If you catch yourself having a moment wondering about how this one decade I supposed to be the best years of your life. I’m here to help navigate this period of transition alongside you. And maybe if you’re far from being twenty-something and have a desire to live like you still are twenty-something, then these posts are written for you too.

Day by day I’m trying to find and embrace the things that make life a little better. I’ll be sharing the moments I find that make life worth taking that next step forward for and opening up about the memories that will continue to make each year feel like the best one yet.

When I first started this blog five years ago, I was going through a period of MAJOR transition (just been laid off from a job, was in a new relationship, moving across the country without any promise of finding a new job… Here’s more about that.) So, it’s no surprise to me that now as I find myself in yet another transitional period, I am somehow I’m called to bring back the blog.

I’m fresh off of celebrating my birthday. As another year has come and gone, I know I can’t help but begin to take inventory of the accomplishments, the failures, and the dreams that have shaped me into who I am in this present moment.

Year twenty-eight, for me, is a year worth writing about, and it’s likely a lot of these events will rule the conversations I’ll explore with you here. On the one hand, year twenty-eight was so beautiful. It was the year so many of my dreams came true. From buying a house to starting a booth at a flea market (which I actually manifested in early days of the blog.) It was a year that was not short of adventures, taking risks, and keeping an open mind.

Allow me a moment to just applaud myself 👏👏👏 I don’t think I’m alone in this, but I know I don’t often give myself the credit I deserve. So join me in a pat on the back to both of us for showing up, for keeping an open mind, and for saying yes to today’s adventure. 🎉

It can happen so easily that our wins and positive moments can be quickly overshadowed by tragedy or difficult times. Can you relate? You’re not the only one! When reflecting on this year, I immediately identify it as the worst year of my life. It will always be the year that I felt the deepest pain and heartbreak in losing my father. A year of sadness and a year of tragedies. The year when all my relationships have been tested like never before. A year of saying a lot of tough goodbyes and bracing myself for change beyond what I could have ever imagined.

I identify heavily as a type-A planner. I take goal setting very seriously. I shared a little bit about my process here in the past. Together these dreams, paired with a relentless drive to try new things, have finally paid off in a lot of ways. However, I could have never planned for any of this to happen.

Today’s Takeaway: Having a clear vision of what you want to accomplish is powerful. I’ve seen firsthand many, many times how you can speak and think something eventually into existence. Having a clear goal will help guide your decision-making and will influence your choices. But don’t be afraid to

change with the plan if the plan begins to change you. Stay nimble and open because the universe might point you in a new direction. Embrace those closest to you, lean on them for support, and accept help when it’s offered. Practice truly putting yourself first. Celebrate every win–no matter how small. Allow yourself to feel every emotion deeply and offer it space to come and go.

UGH the jet lag is real.... I think it's finally starting to set in as I’m writing this! This past week I had an incredible opportunity to travel to Paris for a long weekend getaway. Now that I’m back I’m trying to do everything I can to get back to a functional routine and writing this post seems like the perfect way to start! 

This entire trip starts with a tremendous story. One night, shortly after Thanksgiving, I received a text from a good friend of mine in LA saying she found round trip tickets to Paris for quite literally an unbelievable price (round trip from LAX for less than $400, cheaper than a flight home to Iowa!) My friend then proceeded to ask, “Who wants to go with?” Being that the trip would only be a few weeks away and having to hastily decide in order to take advantage of flight prices made me both incredibly nervous and extremely tempted. I began to think my way through the logical steps.  First, check the bank account and then check the amount of PTO I’ve acquired. Next, I make a phone call to my mom fully expecting her to be the practical one and reel my crazy thoughts back in (as one does when they call their mom in moments like this.) However, much to my surprise that wasn’t her response at all. It was actually something along the lines of “When are you going to have this opportunity again?”  So true… 

Hearing her say that, I knew my mind was already made up! So, I went home and booked a round trip ticket–there was no turning back! A few days later 6 women in total (many of us having never met before) had booked their tickets and started planning the trip of a lifetime! 

Many people I’ve talked to have said they only spent a few days in Paris and that that was enough. After having been now, I can attest to that! We arrived in Paris late Thursday afternoon and left Tuesday afternoon arriving back in LAX Tuesday evening. (Time changes will always be confusing.) Four and a half days was perfect in my opinion! It was enough time to see the city and cross majority of the things off my list without feeling too rushed. By the end, I was exhausted and ready to return home. 

Next we had to find a place to stay! After looking into hotels, hostels and Air BnBs, considering there was six of us, Air BnB seemed like the best option! Paris is divided into different districts and with help from a friend of a friend going on the trip, we had the best insight into the perfect locations. We ended up staying in 2, from which everything was perfectly walkable. Contrary to popular believe, the Eiffel Tower is actually not centrally located so when planning your trip, you may consider staying in a more central neighborhood like we did. My favorite thing about Paris is how easy it is to get around. Whether you want to walk, take the subway, or Uber, all options are readily available and easy to navigate even if you don’t speak any French! 

Like most major European cities, I’ve noticed so far, you can get by with only speaking English. However, it’s always important to me to at least try and speak the language when interacting in public at a restaurant for example No matter where you’re traveling to, I challenge you to at least prepare a few words such as…

I attempted to learn a little French before I left using a free app called Duo Lingo! Although it was helpful to learn some phrases, it’s important to practice consistently in order to retain any of it… I wasn’t very diligent and realized all I could remember was how to say “cat” and needless to say, that didn’t come up in conversation very often.

When I travel, I’m just as much about seeing all the sights and main tourist attractions as I am about finding happy accidents and things off the beaten path. One of my favorite ways to get acquainted with a new city though, is to take a hop on/hop off bus tour. It’s an affordable way to make it to all the main attractions in a city in a short amount of time. It also always helps me to get the lay of the land and realize where things are at in relation to another and not to mention its essentially “free” transportation that you would have paid for to get around anyway! Tours like this are offered in most major cities in the US and Europe. My favorite has always been City Sightseeing or Big Bus tours! We got a two-day pass that included two different bus routes as well as a river boat tour. 

My favorite path less traveled spots included the covered passageways that have been transformed into little shops and restraunts. I also fell in love with the small vendor booths known as Riverside Bouquinistes, that line the river around Notre Dame and contain collections of old prints and books as well as other trinkets and paper goods.

Paris being the city of love was the perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Although not with our loved ones and out on a girl’s trip, we still made sure to celebrate. We went to an amazing restaurant, Matignon (located in 8, an area equivalent to Rodeo Drive or the Upper East Side). It was surely a group date even the Bachelor would have approved of! Afterwards we hit the town for a night out and wound up at a Spanish inspired spot complete with Latin music and dancing. The whole night scene was lively with places that stay open all hours of the night. There was a lot of influence from other cultures depending on the bar, so there’s no reason to not come across an Irish Pub that feels too close to home or a place that feels so foreign you don’t know where to start!

Arguably the best part of traveling has to be trying all the food! Part of the fun of it for me is ordering but not always knowing what you’re going to get! France is no exception! The bread is outstanding, the desserts are worth every bite, the onion soup is unbelievable… but my favorite French cuisine has to be steak and pommes frites (French Fries) What an unexpected pair but man is it good.

On our last night I treated myself out to a restaurant that came highly recommended, le Relais de l’Entrecote. Not only is it delicious but it’s a genius business idea, really! It’s a beautiful, higher end restaurant that you’ll most likely have a wait to get seated (but it’s totally worth it.) Once you sit down you can order a drink but there’s really no menu. The entire place only serves one thing- steak and frites. I got a wonderful glass of red wine and was then treated to a side salad and baguette while I waited for the main course. The waitress then brings the steak and fries from the kitchen, takes them over to a serving station and then prepares the plate for you. (I sat right next to her station, so I got a first-row seat at how it’s done.) She brings you ½ your steak covered in a sauce that’s a cross between au jus and a very subtle pesto along with an order of fries. Meanwhile the other ½ of your steak is covered and resting on a heated tray and when you’re ready she’ll bring a fresh order of fries straight from the kitchen and the other ½ of your steak… two meals for the price of one! Then if you’re really looking for the whole experience, you can select from the extensive and incredible dessert menu (which I couldn’t read a single thing.) I let the waitress pick for me and wound up getting the most incredible two-part chocolate cake (one half is like a brownie and the other a fudgy, very rich flourless cake topped with mint whipped cream.) I left there having never felt so full and got all that for $40 dollars. 

That being said… Paris was actually way more expensive than I thought especially compared to other places like Rome. A double espresso shot would be 5 euros when I could have just got a Starbucks cappuccino at home for cheaper… still it seemed worth it. Overall, it was very comparable to the prices we pay in LA (very expensive to drink cocktails and dinner is typically in the $25-$35-dollar range.)

 Something else that reminds me of LA, the traffic. Although it’s not as densely populated with cars, 15 miles can take you an hour to drive. For example, I always thought Versailles was much further away but when we looked it up, it was only about 15 miles from where we were staying but it’d take over an hour to get there by car. We ended up taking the train all the way there and it couldn’t have been easier! 45 minutes and $3 later we found ourselves standing outside the Palace of Versailles, one of the places I’ve always dreamed about visiting since studying it in Art History classes in college. This was my favorite place we went to during our trip! The palace itself was a little underwhelming but the palace grounds were spectacular, even during off season. I loooooved visiting the Estate of Trianon (something I didn’t even know existed) and I’m now convinced my dream house will resemble Marie Antoinette’s Queen’s Hamlet. You could spend days walking through these parks and still never see it all and if your feet are too tired to go on you can always rent a bike or golf cart to zip around! I would love to go back sometime in the late spring, early summer and see everything in bloom and fully landscaped!

Overall, I’m so glad pulled the trigger and went. It taught me that not everything in life has to be planned and well thought out.  Sometimes just taking a risk can pay off in ways you never even dreamed of. Seeing the world, experiencing history firsthand and learning about other cultures makes traveling so worth it and so important to me. I hope everyone has a chance to explore new places and see the things they’ve dreamed of in real life.

Hey, it’s me again… yep I’m still here despite not having made a post since October! There has been so much going on as we transitioned from 2019 into 2020 that I’ve barely had time to take it all in myself let alone share any of the stories with you! 

However, now’s my chance to bring all my thoughts from these past few months to life and share them with you. This year, I’ll be approaching things a little differently with the blog. I’m beginning to come to terms with the fact that I really can’t do everything and that means picking and choosing what I spend my time focusing on. There are so many experiences and opportunities both past and present that I can’t wait to share, but as my goals continue to change the blog posts might change a little bit with it. 

To put all these thoughts in perspective here’s a look at what kept me busy this past year and a preview of what’s in store for 2020! 

Goal setting has never been more important to me than it is now.

One thing is for sure, goal setting has never been more important to me than it is now. Writing things down somehow gives me comfort in the fact that I have things I’m working towards as well as holds me accountable to make sure I actually get things done. It’s the most rewarding feeling to look back on a year and all the highs, low points you overcame, and accomplishments you’ve made this past year. 

If you haven’t had the chance to do any formal goal setting yet–there’s plenty of time. If you don’t know where to start, I highly recommend you check out my post about goal setting February Fresh and read about Hilary Rushford’s Elegant Excellence to get your mind thinking about both the big and little things you’re wanting to accomplish! 

Looking back on my list of goals for 2019, although not every goal was accomplished it’s important to realize just how much progress was made. I’ve made an effort to stop referring to my goals as a “plan” and have tried even harder to refrain from “planning” too much of my life out in general.  

Goals change, shift, and evolve throughout the year. Things may come up and get in the way or change your perspective.  It’s always important to look at your list as guidelines and ideas rather than super strict parameters.

Be realistic but also don’t be afraid to think big! When making a list you need goals that are easily attainable if you dedicate the time to them and some goals that will challenge you and push your comport zone. For instance 2018 was a huge year for me with a lot of major life changes and decisions, so my focus for 2019 was about more interpersonal goals and about maintaining a healthy lifestyle in LA. 

Here’s a brief overview of the goals and results from this past year:

• Run a 5k: Checked this one off in April when a friend asked me to run one with her! Signing up and paying is a great way to hold yourself accountable. 

• Visit a new state/country: I managed to cross off a lot of new places in the United States this past year! Read about it in Cars, Castles & Clesi, Destination Denver & Cross Country.

• Book 5 Freelance Clients/projects: This past year I was fortunate to work with some amazing new clients and well exceeded 5 projects! One in particular certainly stands out and I hope to soon share the story of The Strength Shop with you all!

• Pay off at least ½ of my student loans: After attending a networking/speaker event…. They convinced me this is not something to put off, so I ripped off the Band-Aid and took care of it all at once! No more student loans!

• Read a book: Easy to do when your friends start a book club…and here we are 6.5 books later.

• Visit home at least 3 times: Done, but I wish it could be even more!

Now for the goals that have yet to be accomplished….

The goals you don't accomplish are just as important as the ones you did! It's crucial to take a look at this list and realize and reflect on "why didn't this one happen?" Then try and figure out if it's still one that's important to you and worth continuing to pursue.

• Create a successful morning/evening routine: While progress was made at times, it’s not super quantifiable and hard to really say. It is still in need of some work. 

• Try something new/learn a new skill: I tried LOTS of new things that would satisfy this goal, but they weren’t necessarily the activities that came to mind when I wrote the goal down. I needed to be more specific. 

• Launch a creative Passion Project: I spent a lot of time thinking about this one and looking for something that I was actually passionate enough to put the work into…

When I actually figured it out, I was too scared to actually move forward with it. 

Well no more, you heard it here first–this year my main goal is to drive that passion project forward and not let fears and uncertainties keep me from going for it!

Do you have something on your list of goals for the year that you really want but you’re afraid to make it happen? Maybe it’s changing jobs or starting your own business? Maybe it’s moving somewhere new or maybe it’s wanting to try a new exercise class…. Whatever the situation may be… We’ve all been there. Part of why I love Hilary’s goal setting process so much is because the thought process you consistently going through always ends up at the same place, “just start.” 

Starting is the hardest thing! No matter what the goal is, finding the courage to start it and go for it is the biggest roadblock you face but once that part is over, imagine all the amazing things that can follow. I’ve had this realization before but yet it still held me back this past year. I now know the outcome I’m looking for more clearly and I know I’m capable of making it happen so there’s no more excuses. 

So, for me my major goal for 2020 is getting my Passion Project off the ground and turning it into a business. I plan to share information about this passion project every step of the way as well as progress as it relates to other goals with hopes to not only hold me accountable but keep you on track to exceed your goals this year as well! 

The rest of my goals this year have been divided up into categories: personal, health, relationships, hobbies, and career! Some specifics that stand out include: 

• Analyzing and fine tuning my financial budget 

• Move to a new apartment

• Focus more on my breathing

• Cook a new healthy recipe once a month

• Maintain working out at least 3 times a week

• Continue Personal Dates at least once a month

• Play more games (board games/card games) 

• Travel to 3 New Places (city/state/country)

• Read 10 Books

• Actually take a lunch break at work by sitting with coworkers or going for a walk

• Write at least 12 new blog posts for Day of Jae

Having a list of your goals is only the first step. Make sure you keep the list handy and accessible. Check back in with it multiple times! Don’t be afraid to change, rewrite, or add to the list. You’re the only thing holding you back from making any of these things a reality. Commit to the ones that matter and go after it! 

For three years I’ve been doing this, following the same process and every time when thinking about the biggest goal on my mind, and someone asks, “What’s holding you back?” my answer has always been… "not starting." Trust me–start now and thank yourself immensely next February.

I now interrupt my prepared blogging schedule to bring you a special edition post about a new movie that is officially out and available on Netflix today (10.11.19) El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie. 

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

ATTENTION: If you haven’t seen Breaking Bad, please watch the series before watching El Camino. They are very much reliant on one another and this is NOT a stand-alone movie.

TIP: It’s been 6 years since the series finale aired, if you haven’t seen the show in some time, I suggest you refresh your memory and watch at least the last 2-3 episodes! 

Ever since attending the world premiere Monday night (and if I’m being honest even some time before that in anticipation of the event) my mind has once again been consumed by all thing in the Breaking Bad universe. I’ve been waiting day racking my brain, over analyzing every detail I could remember, and just waiting for a moment to share my thoughts with you! Now’s my chance. 

Some Thoughts

The opening scene we flash back to Mike’s (Jonathan Banks) final scene in the show and him having a conversation with Jesse (Aaron Paul.) All though the scene feels a little out of place and really tested my memory, Vince Gilligan not only gives us an opportunity to enjoy a favorite character and relationship for a few moments longer but also does his traditional foreshadowing of the events to come. For a minute, I found myself forgetting where we left off and buying into the whole “beautiful moment by the river” which contrasted really nicely and had me jumping out of my seat when we jumped back to the present. 

Back at Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) and Badger’s (Matt Jones) place we get a more intimate moment seeing Jesse struggling with getting back to reality. Something that stands out to me in this moment is the emphasis they put on the scars on his back and face… I’ll come back to that later. Once Jesse emerges from the shower, he appears to be back to normal. PTSD to survival mode, it seemed like a quick transition but I’m also ‘okay’ with the decision to not linger on it more. Skinny Pete and Badger finally get all the lines they deserve and many that have me laughing every time! 

Perhaps one of the most interesting moments in the whole movie in my opinion is as Jesse starts to take off Skinny Pete hands Jesse his signature stocking hat. A gesture that speaks louder than words, but when you pair it with what he says about Jesse being his “hero” it takes it to a whole different level. I’m still internalizing this scene. I think Skinny Pete’s help here gives Jesse the will to survive and is just the encouragement he needs to remember what he’s fighting for. Without someone so actively fighting in his corner and motivating him to push on vs. turning himself in (which comes in to play later on also) he has a force driving him forward. 

Next we get a whole deeper look into a relationship I 100% didn’t expect. The whole premiere I was wondering why everyone was obsessing so much over Todd (Jesse Plemons.) He’s easily the worst character in Breaking Bad because of Season 5 Episode 5 and if you still don’t know, yes, the one where he shoots the kid… However, we get to see a whole lot more Todd. How is it that the same guy that can murder an innocent child and be fine with keeping a human locked in a cage also the guy who will send down ice cream, cigarettes, and volunteer to stay home and look after Jesse all weekend? Still not a sweetheart but the conflicting actions that seem to have no degree of difference in emotions for him—so interesting! 

It’s here in these next few flash back scenes that I do enjoy getting to learn a little more about the El Camino itself and some of the other significant events that have taken place. Right off the bat I wasn’t buying that the apartment was Todd’s. If the pastel colors didn’t give it away, the kitchen table sure did and the snow globe collection really sealed the deal. What I am confused by is the story that she was the maid and found the money and that was the motivation for killing her. I think it’s a lot more likely that he needed that location/apartment specifically for whatever reason and decided to kill her and take it. Why? Well besides the interior decorating, he didn’t really have an idea of what would be in the cupboard (a collection of things an old lady is a lot more likely to have than a twenty-something-old guy. Although don’t get me wrong I do feel that he’s been living there based on the out-of-place random collection of very modern furniture. 

Now the true crime junkie in me was very concerned with the question, “Why’d he chooses to strangle her, more specifically with the belt.” For that he would have most likely snuck up on her from behind, not attacked her in the middle of an argument. It’s also the kitchen so knife seems like a heat of the moment choice, but again nosy neighbor might have heard maybe that’s why? Probably not worth lingering but how the rest of this plays out with the rolling the body and “moving” her to the car—priceless moments! My final thought on this poor dead woman that I have so many questions about. When the “police” officers come to visit the nosy neighbor tells them that he’s met the guy that’s living there and basically isn’t a huge fan of Todd (who is?) but this leads me to believe that either that lady has really been dead for a while long enough for people to assume she moved out and someone moved in OR it really is Todd’s apartment…. Still not buying it though. 

Burying the body‑now why Jesse gives the gun back… well if he would have shot Todd the story obviously would most likely have not led to the ending, we see in Breaking Bad. Obviously, I believe it took more than just pepperoni pizza to sway Jesse’s mind. However, I think it’s more than just Jesse thinking that Todd’s uncles would still manage a way to get after Brock. I think its kind of back to the idea of Jesse feeling like although life is seemingly as bad as it gets—he doesn’t have much to fight for anymore. Everything he loves and knows and cared about at that point has been taken away and it’s arguable that Todd is the only person he has in that moment. 

Looking for money I thought for sure it would be in the pool but then we kept getting shots of the chimney… the refrigerator door, honestly the last place I’d think. You’re telling me the same guy the hid money in books also thought to hide money in the fridge door? I don’t really think so, but maybe!

Unfinished Business

Moving on to some unfinished business. From having to pay debts carried over to the first get-a-new-life attempt to reencountering the welders/DEA agent/ assholes.  It’s in these scenes we see the damage 5 season of Breaking Bad has done on Jesse Pinkman. From staying calm and outsmarting situations thinking 5 steps ahead while having a gun to his head, to trying to strong arm his way into convincing the Vacuum guy to give him a break… all characteristics that remind me of someone else I know. 

Speaking of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) the motel diner scene gives me all the feels! From seeing our beloved characters transition and flash back to their season one selves naive and optimistic we’re really reminded just how far they’ve come. This moment and transition amazes me in these two’s acting abilities to be able to change and rethink back to all those years ago where they started and who they were! 

The conversation though is what intrigues me and opens a few questions. What will Jesse do one day when it’s done? When he has a chance to do something special with his life? I certainly doubt exercise science is where he ends up. Even more confusing is Jesse’s response letting White know that his family will get what they have coming. Potential foreshadowing? Or simply speaking to every decision Walter made during the show FULLY came back to bite his family in the butt? I prefer the first option… more to come! It was based on this statement that I hoped we’d get a peek at modern day life of Skyler, Flynn, and Holly but then I remembered. This is only a few days later not years like in real life. 

Transitions

This brings us to Jesse breaking into his parents and more genius thinking of coming up with the perfect plan to get them and the undercover cops away. You know the first thought here is if he only needs $1,800 surely, he could get the cash or valuables around the house to amount for that much but instead, he gets the guns and gets out. Which we learn is part of a much bigger, premeditated plan. At the shop is when I feel Jesse has transitioned into his full-on Heisenberg mode. Why go back when he doesn’t presumably need the whole amount? Not only does he have nothing to lose but he’s seeking revenge. Like Heisenberg he can’t handle letting the Welder’s get away with the pain they caused and the turmoil they brought into his life. Jesse isn’t ok with letting the welders feel like they got away with something most likely motivated by the main guy’s taunting as Jesse leaves “Todd’s” apartment and remembers him. 

I love the old western style shoot out and getting outsmarted by the sense of betting, genius! The whole scene seems so true in nature to some of the shows biggest moments and did not disappoint, explosion and all. 

So now we’re in Alaska, alas the place Mike recommended (about time Jesse listens to something Mike had to say.) With one final question to answer we see Jesse hand over a letter to be delivered to Brock and then seemingly we’re supposed to trust that it’ll be delivered, and Jesse can go on living his new life. The scene is beautiful, white, quiet. Jesse seems restored refreshed and is in an uncharacteristic white turtleneck sweater. Either he’s really is restored to a new identity and life or this is really an ironic ending. 

Theories

Here. We. Go. The ending does not follow anything we’ve come to expect from Gilligan. It’s too neat. It’s too wrapped up and perfectly presented, somethings fishy. Somehow although all our questions have been answered, I feel left with less resolve than the ending of the TV show. 

Looking back at the scenes and being excited to watch the movie again, I’m reading between all the lines and pauses and honestly, I don’t think this is the last we’ve seen of Jesse Pinkman. The scars that I mentioned before, I don’t feel as if we learned the cause. I don’t believe they were caused by the running and trying to break free from Todd’s lab. The conversation at the Diner with Walter White—there’s got to be more to it. Then if that’s not enough the first trailer shows Skinny Pete in with police discussing where Jesse ran off to. That’s a lot of work to go to just to film a trailer…. Then there’s the ending of the full, main trailer where we hear what we assume is White’s voice (for the record, I do believe he’s actually dead though once they confirmed on the radio news when Jesse was in the car.) 

I feel like we’re missing the other side of the story, the side Hank would tell if he were still alive, the side of the pursuit. I also feel like were missing out on the grief of the family although they did seem to consider their “dad” and “husband” as being dead before it was a reality.

I know this is a stretch, but it also seems to me like a conscious choice to name it “A Breaking Bad Movie” instead of “THE Breaking Bad Movie.” And really stretching it out even further listening to reviews from the premier and reading different articles. Aaron Paul says things referencing hopes for a long relationship with Netflix and “if I only worked for Gilligan the rest of my career, I’d be the happiest man in Hollywood.” Suspicious….

Premiere

Finally, I’d just like to share some photos from the premiere and say it was 100% worth the experience. I feel so fortunate to have gotten to experience this movie this way for the first time and laugh, clap, and jump with a room full of fans. It was truly something special and I’m so glad I get to share a sliver of that experience with all of you! 

All this being said I really enjoyed the movie! I’m such a huge fan though that I would have taken any ounce of these characters in any version they’d deliver. 

When it comes to traveling, I must admit I’m one who prefers to jump on a plane and be at my destination in a fraction of the time.  However, a cross country road trip adventure has always just sounded so romantic and exciting. Emory is not stranger from driving from Iowa to LA usually making the trip all on his own.  I knew I couldn’t make him drive back again by himself. Plus, I had never really seen much of what’s between California and Iowa. Both of these factors inspired me to tag along for the ride, but I had a few ground rules of course! 

1. I wasn’t willing to sleep in the car (Air BnB please!)

2. I didn’t want to drive straight there. 

So, we decided to make a vacation out of it—five and a half days’ worth of driving and exploring from Los Angeles to Iowa. Knowing we would be traveling in the middle of August (the hottest month) we decided to forego Emory’s typical route through all the National Parks and head North then cut over.

Half Day: 

We left after work and headed up the coast towards the Bay Area. We decided to take the scenic route (about 7 hours) and drive up the coast and the PCH and recreate our earlier Summer adventure. The drive was beautiful as always and traffic could have been a lot worse. Taking this route did add and additional 1-2 hours than the inland trip would have but we would argue it was worth it. If you find yourself making the drive DON’T stop for gas in Santa Barbra (take our word for it) and DO stop for food in San Luis Obispo (we stopped at Mo's Barbecue this time.) We finally got to San Francisco late and completely exhausted. We stayed in a boutique hotel we rented via Air BNB called The Bartlett. It was super cute and trendy, however not the cleanest nor friendliest staff. All things considered though when you take into account, we were staying in one of the most expensive cities, we weren’t complaining. 

Day One: 

We headed out about 9:00 am the next morning on a journey to squeeze as much of San Francisco in in a day as we could. Emory had already been, but it was my first time. We headed down to Fisherman’s Warf and grabbed beignets and cappuccinos for breakfast at Frankie’s at Pier 43. Oh my goodness though, people were eating fish and chips that early in the morning, but it actually looked and smelled incredible. So much in fact we went back to Frankie’s for lunch! Not only was it affordable but they claim to have the best fish and they’re right. I have a feeling this place will be a staple anytime I find myself in SF! 

After breakfast we caught a street performer act and walked through the Musse Mecanique, the antique penny arcade. Grandma predicted my fortune, we walked down Pier 39, got a great view of Alcatraz (which I didn’t realize was so close by the way) as well as a great view looking back at the city. After watching the seals, we decided it was time to go find the main attraction, the Golden Gate Bridge, at Crissy Field. 

Immediately as we got close to the bridge the most perfect sunny day transitioned to foggy, misty, and overcast like magic! We pulled over, snapped a few pictures and continued on our way.  Before leaving the bay area, we checked out Muir Woods, which was even foggier and cloudier! After a close run in with poison oak we decided we didn’t have time for a hike and instead just enjoyed the view. Look what we found?! Another Hawkeye fan with a Subaru… What are the chances?!

Back in the car for the next leg of the journey! We left around 3:30 in the afternoon driving from Muir Woods to Lake Tahoe.  Four hours’ drive through winding mountains, an incredibly bad traffic jam at the worst placed stoplight, and a pit stop at the Eldorado National Forest later and we arrived at our second destination, Lake Tahoe.  

Day 2:

Finally, a day with no driving and a chance to relax. Funny and sad how excited I was to just enjoy a day with no driving considering all the driving we had done thus far hadn’t gotten us any closer to our final destination. We were also excited because neither of us had been to Lake Tahoe. We started our day where any adventure tends to begin, Starbucks. I must admit though, it was more out of necessity for wifi access than anything! Next we started driving around the lake and made our way to the Eagle Falls trailhead. FYI there’s a Lower Falls (that is right off the road and no hike required) and the upper falls. It’s a very mellow and short hike to the upper falls but then the keeps going for a great look out of Emerald Bay and eventually opens to a beautiful lake view. 

After the hike we had a picnic lunch at the Camp Richardson General Store and a scoop of sorbet at the Ice Cream shop! I felt like we had traveled back in time to summer camp in Parent Trap or Wet Hot American Summer. 

After freshening up we had plans for a sunset boat cruise tour of Emerald Bay complete with wine tasting and a charcuterie board! We had an amazing time being out on a boat, watching the sun go down, and meeting another incredible young couple that were visiting from the Bay Area. After attempting to find real food on a Sunday night, we headed back to the apartment and rested up for a big day of driving. 

Day 3:

Back on the road and ready to make our way through the desert. Leaving Tahoe, we quickly drove through Reno, Nevada and then cut across the state to Utah (another 7-8-hour drive.) We took a much-needed detour and stopped at the Bonville Salt Flats. After a few attempts at some doughnuts in the Subaru, watching a U-Haul haul down the speedway, and tasting the salt it was back on the road again. Along the way I of course made us stop at the first Jimmy Johns I could find for lunch and before long we made it all the way to Salt Lake City.

Once we got to the cutest Air BnB I’ve ever seen we headed to downtown Salt Lake which was beautiful and incredibly charming. We walked around Temple Square and then scootered to The Green Pig Pub for dinner with a view of the of the city-county building. 

Day 4:

Although this would be the second longest day of driving on the whole trip—it was worth it to see some familiar faces. We started with breakfast at Earnie’s Sports Deli in Orem with a college friend before another 8-hour drive. We made a few stops off the side of the road like the site of an old mine explosion, to see the Colorado River at the No Name exit, and the Colorado Sign just to name a few! 

Being ahead of schedule we did decide to stop in Grand Junction, Colorado for lunch at Rockslide Brewery and to check out a few antique shops while we walked off our beer. Before long we made it to Denver! Finally! This leg of the road we were fortunate to get to stay with friends. The same friends I stayed with in July mentioned in my Destination Denver post. Now after two years of not seeing each other we were fortunate to see each other twice in less than two months! We went out for dinner at Blue Moon Brewery at which we ran into another friend unexpectedly AND had the most amazing beer flights and pickle burgers. Now, I’m not much of a beer person but with beer flavors like Mexican hot chocolate, cold brew coffee, and a mango wheat (which you can buy at stores and I highly recommend) how could you not enjoy them! 

Day 5: 

Sadly, it was time to leave and time to get home. Day five’s motto was all drive and no play because a ten-hour drive through mostly Nebraska is not something to get excited about. However, with home being the final destination it was enough to keep us moving forward. Emory was a champ at this point, doing most of the driving and soon enough we were back in our great state of Iowa. 

To wrap up one of the most amazing trips and 37 hours of being in a car, I had a weekend at home with my friends, family and love ones. As well as a chance to relax, golf, drive through Ledges State Park, and eat at Jimmy B’s of course (my favorite barbecue place EVER in Boone, Iowa.) 

The trip flew by and dragged on all at the same time but overall, I couldn’t be happier with the experience. It gave Emory and I a much-needed adventure before going back to long distance. It was filled with many firsts in cities that will always hold special memories. Most of all though, the trip couldn’t have happened without its primary sponsor, Dramamine. (Ok it wasn’t really sponsored by Dramamine, but it should have been because it’s seriously the only thing that kept me alive!!!) 

Now Summer is officially over and we’re headed into my favorite time of the year. This Fall I still have a few more goals to accomplish before a New Year’s deadline! I’ll also be very busy with some exciting projects at work and I’m looking forward to a girls' get away trip, a visit from my parents, and ALL things Halloween.
